Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (GI) provides an array of clinical services, educational programs, and active clinical and basic science research activities in the digestive system and its disorders. We provide both inpatient and outpatient consultative services for the evaluation and care of Veterans. In doing so, the Division aims to improve the care and outcome of our patients and to educate trainees in GI disorders.

GI is home to nationally-recognized faculty. Historically, the Division has made a number of seminal contributions in the fields of colorectal cancer screening and outcome. More recently, the Division is contributing to the understanding of colonoscopy delivery and quality improvement, stool transplant for intestinal infections, and Barrett’s esophagus. In addition to the faculty who are part of Division at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, there are also faculty who participate in GI research and training activities at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

The Division continues to maintain highest ambitions for excellence in all three of its major missions: patient services, teaching, and research.
