Hematology-Oncology Service

The Hematology-Oncology (Hem-Onc) Service at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System provides quality cancer patient care, conducts both clinical and laboratory cancer research programs to improve the care and outcome of our VA cancer patients, and educates trainees in cancer care.

The Hem-Onc Section provides both inpatient and outpatient consultative services for the evaluation and care of approximately 30 new patients weekly, and has approximately 13,000 outpatient provider visits annually.

Patient Navigation Team - Patient, surrounded by Oncology RN, Physician Assistant, Medical Oncologist, Pharmacist, Program Support, Social Worker, Dietician, Clinic MSA, Chemo Infusion RN

Our department has 8 Medical Oncologists, 4 Physician Assistants, 2 Oncology pharmacists, an Oncology Patient Navigation Team consisting of 1 RN and 1 Program Support Assistant, and multiple RNs, LPNs and Clerical staff providing service in the Hem-Onc Clinic (3V) and Oncology Infusion Clinic (3F). In addition, the Oncology Team has a Social Worker, a Dietitian, and an integrated network with Specialty Care services to meet your every need.

Oncology Patient Navigation Services:

May we help you? Our Oncology Patient Navigation Team is there for you. The Navigation Team, consisting of 1 RN and 1 Medical Support Assistant (MSA), is there to specifically assist you and your family through the often confusing world of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Our team offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome health care system barriers and facilitate timely access to quality medical and psychosocial care. 

Hematology-Oncology Clinic (3V):

The 3V Hem-Onc Clinic is located on the 3rd floor just off of the Outpatient Elevators. In this clinic you will receive individualized attention specific to your disease. Your assigned staff physician will direct your care with the assistance of trainee physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacists. An Oncology social worker and dietician is available to help with your care needs. 

Oncology Procedure Clinic (3F):

The Hem-Onc Procedure Clinic, located on 3F, coordinates and provides outpatient cancer treatment. The clinic provides outpatient care five days a week and is staffed by nurses and two pharmacists, with clerical support. The nursing staff serves the outpatient Hem-Onc clinics, administers chemotherapy, and provides other patient care needs such as the transfusion of blood products and hydration. Any necessary weekend chemotherapy administration is provided by designated chemotherapy-trained staff of 3F inpatient care nurses. 

My HealtheVet and Your Cancer Care:

My HealtheVet is VA's online personal health record. It helps you partner with your health care team and provides you opportunities and tools to make informed decisions and manage your health care. 

My HealtheVet provides VA patients with convenient online access to prescription refillsappointments, lab results, and health-related resources like the Veterans Health Library. Veterans can now access their VA clinical notes through Blue Button on My HealtheVet as well.  Blue Button allows Veterans to view, print, or save their health records making it easy to share them with non-VA providers, family members, or caregivers. Secure Messaging, another beneficial feature of My HealtheVet, can be used to communicate non-urgent, health-related issues to your health care teams. Your health care team may also use Secure Messaging to send you educational information about your medical condition.

Veterans can register for a basic My HealtheVet account from any computer or Smartphone, this will give you access to online prescription refills. To upgrade your account, talk with your nurse or other Oncology Staff member to become “In-Person Authenticated”, this will give you access to all of the My HealtheVet features. Studies show that patients who are more involved in their health care decisions have better outcomes. Take an active role in your healthcare by signing up for My HealtheVet today at www.myhealth.va.gov.
