Refills are prescriptions that have more fills available and have not yet expired. Renewals are prescriptions that do not have more fills available or are too old or have expired. Renewals need action by a health care provider. The pharmacy may have to contact your health care provider before you can get more medication.
Medication refills and renewals should be ordered at least two weeks before you need a new supply. You can request refills and renewals by mail, by phone, or by using the internet. A pharmacist will review your medications and put them in the mail. If your health care provider needs to be contacted, the pharmacy will take care of it. You do not have to call the clinic.

Mail-in Refill Instructions
Mail-in refill slips are included with all your prescriptions when they are filled.
Please request prescription refills by mail at least two weeks before needed.
Telephone Refill Instructions
The Minneapolis Health Care System Pharmacy uses AudioCareTM the automated communications system to order refills at your convenience 24 hours a day seven days a week. Please call 1-855-560-1721 using a touchtone telephone to access the AudioCareTM system.
Please have your social security number and prescription number available in order to follow the voice prompts.
Plan on ordering your refills 3-4 weeks in advance to ensure your medication arrives on your desired date.
My HealtheVet Prescription Refill Instructions (Internet)
Using My HealtheVet's Online Prescription Refill (view My Healthevet web site)
- Log onto My HealtheVet using the UserID and Password you created during registration.
- Click on Prescription Refill or click on the Pharmacy tab.
- Click on Refill My Prescriptions.
This shows all of the prescriptions that are currently Active for you as a VA patient. Most of your prescriptions can be refilled online. Some medications, specifically "Schedule 2" medications, cannot be refilled online.
- To refill a prescription, click in the check boxes of the medications that you wish to refill and then click Submit.
To make sure you are refilling the proper prescription, use the Prescription Number on the label of your medicine bottle.
- When you have submitted requests for refills, the screen is updated to let you know the status of your request. When the status is Submitted, your request has been received for processing.
- You may view more information about the submitted requests by clicking on the magnifying glass image in the View Detail column.

What if the doctor changes my dose?
Make sure the new prescription gets sent to the pharmacy with the new directions. Read the label of the new bottle carefully to make sure that you take the correct dose.
How soon should I request prescription refills?
Please request your next supply of medications at least two weeks before you need them. This allows time for processing and mailing, which can take 10-14 days.
What if my medication looks different?
If your medication looks different and there is no message sticker on the bottle stating that there has been a change in manufacturer, call the pharmacy and ask about it.
What if I have more questions?
If you have any problems or questions about your medications, call (612) 725-2090, Monday thru Friday, between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. At other times, you may reach a pharmacist by calling the Medical Center operator at (612) 725-2000. If it is an urgent situation, the operator will transfer you to the pharmacist on duty. Do not do this to request refills or prescriptions.
