Veterans Integration To Academic Leadership

Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership

What is VITAL?

Veterans Integration To Academic Leadership (VITAL) is a Veteran-centered, results oriented collaboration between the Minneapolis VA Health Care System and higher education. We strive to enhance academic retention and success by meeting the student Veteran (or service member) where they are – on campus!

How the VITAL Program Helps Student Veterans

Providing Care Coordination

Care Coordination through the VITAL program offers student Veterans a systematic process of ongoing assessment, planning, referral, service coordination, monitoring and advocacy assistance through which multiple service needs are addressed to promote academic success.

Engaging in VA Health Care

It is essential to engage in health care services that positively improve your overall physical health. At the Minneapolis VA we understand the needs of service members. To begin your no-cost/low cost VA health care, fill out VA Form 10-10 EZ. Once you've completed the VA Application for Health Care Benefits, mail it, along with your recent DD 214 (member 2 or 4), to:

Linking to Mental Health Services

Research shows that anxiety and/or depression can lead to an increased risk of non-completion of a post-secondary education. The VITAL program in conjunction with the Minneapolis VA offers student Veterans mental health support. There are two options: first, traditional office-based mental health support ranging from psychiatry to therapy; second, in an effort to meet you where you're at, through the VITAL program you have the opportunity to participate in mental health services via your computer from a comfortable location of your choice. We know that you're busy with school, work and other obligations that can limit your time. Let us help you.

If you are interested in office based or computer-based therapy:

Connecting to VA Academic Support

Trouble concentrating in school? Feeling overwhelmed with college demands? You are not alone. The VA Supported Education Program helps student Veterans experiencing mental health symptoms. This is a individualized program that leverages your innate skills and applies them to enhance your ability to take notes, apply your learning to classwork and leverage your skills to maximize your educational experience.

Giving Aid in Filing a Claim for Injuries Incurred While in the Military

Service members sometimes incur injuries while in performance of their duties. It is the VA's role to assess and treat these injuries, and one of the best ways to ensure you have lifetime care for these injuries is by filing a claim for compensation and pension. If you're interested in filing a claim for injuries incurred while in the military you can call 612-250-9267, seek assistance from your local county veteran services office or fill out VA Form 21-526. Once you've completed the VA Application for Compensation and/or Pension, mail it to:

Department of Veterans Affairs
Claims Intake Center
PO Box 4444
Janesville, WI 53547-4444
